We’ve heard so much about online dating that we can’t forget the number of online dating services has continued to grow, but did you know that there are a number of different types of online dating services as well?

First there are the general types of services that we’re most likely familiar with, those like Match.com, Yahoo! Personals and others that are similar to that. These services offer you full access to their membership database, and currently they hold the major share of the market. Then they provide you with only those matches which they calculate what type of person is compatible with you. These services offer no access to profiles; you only ever see the ones they feel are most suitable.

Then there are the sites which are growing in popularity – mainly those that are free, and provide a way to connect with folks you know and those you don’t. MySpace, Friendster and Orkut are beginning to cut into the online dating market specifically because they offer not only free online dating services, but they seem to provide you more control over who you chat with and who you don’t - a big plus over some other services.

We then must look at the hundreds of ‘niche’ online dating services. Whether you’re into golf, dogs, cats, Star Trek, whether you are Jewish, HIV positive, Catholic, etc., there are hundreds of online dating sites who will match you with someone who shares your passion.

The newcomers to the online dating scene are the Merging Online Dating Services – they claim to offer both offline and online dating environments, by allowing you to put a profile on their website, and then offer the address to those that you come in contact with through their online dating service or in your day to day travels.

With the ever growing selection of online dating services, the more than forty million singles in the United States who have decided to seek a relationship through online dating services will have an opportunity to meet someone who is right for them! Statistically speaking, this is more likely than meeting someone in your local bar (only nine percent of women and two percent of men admit to having met someone this way!).

Searching carefully online for the right online dating service for you is easier than ever before. Online dating services are designed to open up opportunities to meet others – and with this market growing all the time, there’s no doubt that there is an online dating service that is right for you!
