Those who are thinking of including one of these clichés in their online dating profile should think again.

“ I can’t believe I’m doing this…” remember something – everyone is doing the same thing you’re doing when they sign up for an online dating service!! Using this line implies you think there is something really weird about belonging to an online dating service. You should also avoid lines like, “I’m doing this because my best friend made me do it.”

“I love watching sunsets on the beach while holding hands.” Well this isn’t exactly unique now is it! If you have this on your header you’re going to get fewer responses because there are at least 3000 other online dating profiles that say the same thing. So what! What else is it that you like – get real! (Remember, sunsets on the beach are great in the summer time but there are other times of year!)

“I’m as comfortable in jeans as I am in a cocktail dress.” And your point is? How about something a little more original such as: ‘I worked in a high powered job and to relax I love to put on a pair of jeans and kick back and watch a football game’. Far more original, and gets the point across. Remember online dating sites attract all sorts of people so you want your profile to stand out.

“I give great backrubs.” Good for you. If you’re a professional masseuse this is great but otherwise why would you put this in your online dating profile? How about something like “I’m a creative writer and I’m also very good with my hands” – (if that’s what your job is of course).

“I want to be with someone who’s my best friend.” Sounds like a wedding card greeting doesn’t it? How about I’m interested in meeting someone for a long term friendship and possible romance? Your online dating profile needs to stand out and gain some attention. Hundreds of other profiles start out the same way!

“No game players!” OK I play chess does that count me out? Seriously though online dating sites unfortunately are ripe for people who are just interested in seeing how many people they can contact and ‘hook up’ with so this isn’t that unusual to see in an online dating profile. Try something like “I’m an honest gal/guy looking for an honest guy/gal”

“I know how to treat a woman/man.” OK Let’s hope so! Your online dating profile is the first thing that fellow online dating service subscribers are going to see. So try to make this a little unique ‘I love to watch the football game with my man’ or ‘I love to help out making snacks for the football game before the two of us watch it together’. That’ll get a little more attention.

Finding a good dating match online is hard enough without throwing in tasteless boring lines that a million other profiles have as well. Be creative, stand out with something original and see if it doesn’t get you a better response! I think you will be pleasantly surprised…
