You have had your share of dates, you’re busy with work and your free time is precious to you. You’re also not much interested in searching for that special someone full time, so you’ve decided that you’re going to try an online dating service. An online dating service can be the right avenue for many of us, however, if you’re not sure what you should be looking for, as far as what services they might offer to you as a member, they can be loaded with disappointment.

Many dating services will offer you a free trial period so you can decide which one is right for you. But before you sign up, carefully read their terms and conditions because many of them will bill your credit card past the trial date unless you specifically go online and cancel.

Most services will provide you with data that will tell you how many people are registered on the online dating site, but keep something in mind; this is not necessarily a valid number. The number of ‘registrations’ and the number of active members (those that are participating regularly) will often vary greatly. Memberships often remain open for a specific period of time after a trial period, so people who may have signed up and never participated will still show as members.

Some online dating sites will offer background checks on members. Most do not do this, and frankly, be aware that due to privacy laws those background checks will be limited and may be of little or no value. Also, since you should at least initially remain anonymous, you probably are assuming too much if you ask your online dating match to not be anonymous!

Some online dating services offer ‘ profiles’. These are o.k., but don’t get talked into paying exorbitant rates for an online dating service that does this without understanding the limitations of what they can and cannot offer. Some online dating services offer these and then only allow you to view profiles of those users who match according to this compatibility profile.

How much or how little information you can put into your online dating profile will enhance or restrict your ability to find a suitable match on an online dating service. If you can only put a short paragraph (and the other online dating service members can only do the same), you may have to search far more profiles to find a match. Search out sites that allow you to put a good mix of information about yourself and the type of person you’re hoping to find through your online dating service.

There are many things that can add to your online dating service experience. Many services offer online dating tips, online dating articles, chat rooms (private and public) email services and more. Determine what it is you are looking for in an online dating service before you register or take on an expensive membership.
