Meet at a public location – When you’re meeting someone for the first time you will want the location to be as public as possible. You don’t want to make your date feel uncomfortable and you do not want to be uncomfortable either.

Make plans ahead of time – Make sure that when you are ready to go out on a date, you have an idea of where you’re going and what you’re going to do. Nothing is more frustrating than spending the first hour of an evening trying to make plans!

Pay attention to your date – If you pay attention to what your date is saying it will allow you to keep asking questions. Since you’ve met through an online dating service, you don’t necessarily know a lot and there are plenty of opportunities to get to know someone better face to face!

Keep eye contact going – You probably do not want to stare at your date, but while you’re talking, you will want to maintain eye contact so they know you’re paying attention. Remember your online dating service match is as nervous as you are and this will give an opportunity to develop some rapport. Getting to know each other is the fun of new dating relationships.

Offering to split the bill – Especially when you are on a first date, one of the most common problems is who pays the bill. When you meet someone for the first time after being introduced through an online dating service, it is a good practice to be prepared to pay half the bill. This goes for guys and gals!

Use your sense of humor! - If you have a great sense of humor don’t forget to let your date know it!! This is especially helpful if you’ve been introduced through an online dating service, as both of you are likely to be nervous and humor can help break the ice.

What type of talk is ok? - If you feel that small talk is more comfortable with your online dating service match then stick to small talk. If you are very well informed on a topic (one that’s not too boring) then go ahead and feel free to open this up for discussion. It’s a good bet that you’ve had several chats with your online dating service match and you have some common interests that you can talk about. Do not be overly aggressive; avoid talking about failed romances or negative topics and avoid overtly sexual conversations.

Following up after a date – Whether you had a good time or not you should take a moment to follow up with an email or call to thank your date. If you found that you and your online dating service match are not well suited, you can simply say thank you for dinner (or drinks or coffee) and explain you don’t think you’re well matched – on the other hand if you had a great time let them know that and tell them you’d be interested in learning more about them!
