Online Dating Preparation

Page 2 - continued from Online Dating Preparation

  • As mentioned, you need to know what things you want in a person and what things you do not want. For instance, if you do not want someone that smokes or drinks, then stick with your decision. Perhaps you follow a certain religion that is sacred to you and instead of hoping the other person will change, look for the same beliefs in another person.
  • Know going into online dating just how far you are willing to go for someone. Would you be willing to quit your job, change schools, or leave family and friends if you met someone living in another city, state, or country? Would you be willing to travel if you met someone that was in the military? Would you be willing to live a less elaborate lifestyle if you fell in love with a starving artist? These are all very important things to consider so take a personal inventory to determine exactly how far you will go.
  • How much are you willing to put in financially if you met someone that lived in another location? Obviously, a long-distance relationship can work but it takes more effort, patience, and money.

Many factors play into the online dating scenario. Do you want children? If you have children, how will you handle merging two families? Do either one of you have elderly or disabled parents? What will your financial situation look like? Something magical happens when two people fall in love and many times, without giving much thought to the long-term effects. For this reason, you need to prepare yourself before you get started. Make sure you understand your limitations and be prepared to follow your heart and beliefs.
